Conclusions

1. All of the tested wastepaper can be degraded by cellulase, with paper towel showing the highest degree of hydrolysis.

2. Among the enzymes examined, cellulase from T. reesei (Celluclast® 1.5L) showed the highest degree of paper degradation, especially in combination with cellobiase (Novozyme® 188).

3. The addition of more cellulase, a longer incubation time, and a temperature increase can speed up the completion of paper towel degradation.

4. The end product of wastepaper degradation is identified as glucose, the substrate for the production of ethanol by fermentation.
