BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Cleaners
When I looked up
information on cleaners I found that the word detergent and cleaner is
really the same thing. There are quite a few things that can be
considers detergents. Even water is a detergent or cleaner.
Water
Water is the most
basic detergent and it works to clean mainly by washing way the surface
dirt. Water can be soft or hard depending on the minerals in the water.
Soft water that comes from rivers and lakes makes a better cleaner.
Soap
Soap is a type of
detergent. Soap is made out of lye, which can be made from the water
mixed with the ashes from burnt wood, and fat or oil from either
vegetable or animals. Soap is the oldest man made cleaner. They have
been using soap as a cleaner for 4,500 years. Soap can be considered a
biodegradable and renewable resource.
Synthetic
Detergents
Synthetic
detergents are made from synthetic molecules that come from petroleum.
These molecules are sometimes called surfactants (short for
surface-active-agents) and are mixed with other types of ingredients
such as enzymes and phosphates. Synthetic detergents are not as
biodegradable and non-renewable. These types of cleaners are use widely
for laundry and dishwashers and other cleaning activities.
Saponins
Saponins come from
a wide group of plants that produce saponin molecules. The plant I am
using in my experiment is called Saponaria officinalis (Prairie
Carnation). Saponins can be made from different parts of plants;
sometimes the roots such as in the soap root plant sometimes the leaves
and sometimes the seeds.
Since saponins can
be made by mixing plants and water they are believed to be the oldest
man used cleaners.
NOTE!!!! Saponins can be poisonous if you eat or breath
them in. They have also
been used as medicines.
