Discussion It looked like the sunlight was the best environment to grow mold in, and second best was heat without extra light. We do know that heat and sometimes light are good for molds. But the cold fridge seemed even better than all our environments. Why? We realized that your glass jars were very well sealed so maybe inside them there wasn’t enough oxygen for our molds to grow big. Many molds do need oxygen to grow. Maybe by choosing glass jars (and protecting the planet) we were being unkind to our molds! We don’t know why the coffee grounds didn’t show any mold at all. Maybe something in coffee kills microbes? Maybe there were molds growing in the coffee but they were too dark to be seen against the dark coffee. Plans for Further Research Next time we grow molds we will try other foods in very warm, open places with lots of air! |
