What We Did

We read that molds grow best in dark, humid and warm places. We decided to test three kinds of foods in three kinds of environments, which gave us nine samples altogether:

The foods were bread, orange and coffee grounds.

We chose the bread because other people have grown good molds on bread. We chose the orange because we have seen lots of good white and blue molds on them in our kitchen.

We chose the coffee grounds because we grew molds on them last summer, and because the parents here drink a lot of coffee!

The three environments we picked were:

--our kitchen windowsill which is sunny and warm but only for part of the day.

--on a forced air heating vent against a wall in regular light which is warm but not sunny but only for part of the day

--inside a dark shoebox in the same room as the other 2 environments.

We put all the samples inside glass jars because we didn’t want to waste plastic bags, then closed the lids tightly. With the bread we rubbed them with Safeway Q-tips coated with dust bunnies because we read that that was a good way to get lots of mold on it.
