Welcome to our Virtual Science Fair project!

We have decided to research about the disease called Leukemia.  Leukemia is the most common type of cancer found in children and an estimated amount of 22,000 people die each year.

The very first sign of leukemia that has been recorded occurred in 1827 when a French physician examined a dead body of a man who had experienced fever, weakness, pus-filled blood and had a spleen that weighed 10 lb.  Years later, many people in Europe also experienced the same kind of fever, weakness, pus-filled blood and a spleen that weighed around 10 lb.  In 1845, Rudy Virchow, a famous German pathologist coined a new term weisses blut meaning white blood in German.  It described the imbalance between white blood cells and red blood cells.  Later on in 1847, Virchow used the term "leukemia" which was derived from the Greek words "leukos" meaning white and "haima" meaning blood.

That is a little bit of the history of Leukemia.  On this site, you will learn about the causes of leukemia and what it does to our bodies.  You will learn of what is currently being done to help find a cure to leukemia.
