Experiment #1
# Liquids and Solids
Position Order of Densities 1. Cork Floats on the top of oil
Least Dense
2. Vegetable Oil Top layer – floats on water > 1 3. Plastic Piece Floats on the top of water > 1, 2 4. Water (colored) Middle layer – floats on corn syrup > 1, 2, 3 5. Grape Floats on top of corn syrup > 1, 2, 3, 4 6. Corn Syrup Bottom layer – sinks to the bottom > 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 7. Quarter Sinks to the bottom of the jar – below corn syrup Most Dense Note : (a) Each liquid or solid sinks down until it finds a liquid that has a higher density than its own. (b) The least dense object floats at the top and the most dense object sinks to the bottom of the jar. Experiment #2
Water: Lime
sinks to the bottom of the jar
Salted Water: Lime floats in salted water CONCLUSION My hypothesis was correct. Less
dense
liquid(s) or solid(s) will float over denser liquid(s) or solid(s). Experiment #2 further confirms the above conclusion. Lime would sink in water. Mixing salt to water makes it more dense. This causes the lime to float in salted water. |
