As countries throughout the world search for renewable sources of energy, the answer may lie in the oceans that separate us. Turbine generators can harness energy from ocean surface currents that travel in relatively constant directions. By designing and building my own turbine generator, I will attempt to answer the following question: Can a simulated ocean current generate enough force to power a 1.5 volt 25mAmp light bulb? I believe that this is possible, and I will test this theory by building a very light electromagnetic generator and simulate a very strong current that will illuminate the bulb. My project will also demonstrate how turbine generators can be used to harness the energy of ocean surface currents. The benefits and challenges of this untapped resource will also be explored. I included two movies on this website that I made to demonstrate how ocean currents are generated, as well as how my simulator works.
