Ethanol: A Piece of cake

Procedure

      Fermentation Procedure

1. Measured out 2 grams of instant yeast and 4 grams of Jatropha cake, place in a labeled flask

2. Measured out 2 grams of  active dry yeast and 4grams of Jatropha cake, place in a labeled flask

3. Measured out 4 grams of instant yeast and 6grams of Jatropha cake, place in a labeled flask

4. Measured out  4 grams of active dry yeast and 6grams of Jatropha cake, place in a labeled flask

5.  100ml of water added to each flask

6. Beakers sealed with the beaker stoppers

7. Flask placed in the oven heated to 40°C

8. Left for 2 days, taking daily observations.

9. On the 2nd Distillation

      Distillation Procedure

1. Filtrate each ethanol solutions

2. Connected the rubber tubes to the water in/out spouts as well as the out spout where the distilled solution will leave the flask

3. Connected the in spout of the distillation flask to the spout on the large Erlenmeyer flask

4. Began putting water through the tube connected to the in spout on the distillation flask

5. Waited until the water had cooled down the entire distillation tube

6. Poured the solution into the large Erlenmeyer flask and turned on the hot plate

7. Put the small Erlenmeyer flask at the end of the tube connected to the distillation out spout

8. Waited until solution boiled and went through the distillation flask

Acid Hydrolysis Procedure

1. Jatropha cake are taken, one well grinded the other washed and dried

2.  8.6g of the well grinded Jatropha cake is measured out in a flask.  7.6g of the washed and dried Jatropha cake is measured out.

3.  60mL of 0.25 mol/L H2SO4 is added into each solution along with 2g of instant yeast

4. Each flask is placed  in the oven for 30 minutes at 110°

5. The solution is filtered, The pH is adjusted to 5.0 with CaO (s)

6. Ferment  the filtrate by adding 2g/ 100mL of solution at 40

7. Tested for Ethanol

     Test for Ethanol Procedure

1. 20 drops of the Ethanol made from the previous experiments was added

2. 20 drops of Ethanol made was then added along with 50 drops of Iodine and 20 drops of NaOH solution.

3. Shake well, the dark colour of iodine will fade  becoming cloudy

4. A yellow precipitate Iodoform is formed

5. Compare to alcohol to test for ethanol
