What is a shadow

A shadow is a dark area or shape produced by a body coming between rays of light and a surface. Shadow appears when an object comes between the light and the surface, since the light cannot pass through opaque things shadow falls. Shadow does not fall for transparent things. Due to the stoppage of light shadow occurs and the size of shadow depends on the angle at which the light falls on the body. So for a shadow to form, we need a source of light and an opaque object. A natural source of light is the sun. Everyone must have observed that the length of the shadow changes through the day. Sometimes the shadow is very long and sometimes it is very short.

Experiment Design

     Materials

•    Cardboard
•    Scissors
•    Plain paper
•    Markers
•    Watch

     Method
  • Cut the cardboard into a circle, square and triangle shapes. I also made a model of a person with the cardboard to understand our shadows better.
  • To begin with carry all the pieces outside where the sun shines on a sidewalk or driveway.
  • Choose time slots from mid morning, every 2hours to take the readings of the shadows.
  • Take each cardboard shape into sunlight at one particular position, and make an outline of the shadow on a plain paper. The shape has to be touching the paper.
  • After 2hrs, take the shapes outside to the same place and put them in the same position and outline the shadows.
  • Take readings as above every 2hours, for at least 5 readings.
