FOOD

The black-footed ferret is a carnivore.  It eats prairie dogs, gophers (Richardson’s ground squirrels), insects, mice, and ground-nesting birds.  Its favourite food is prairie dogs.  Its long, thin body and short, stubby legs help it to run through prairie dog tunnels without getting stuck.  Its sharp teeth are useful for killing and tearing up prey.  The black-footed ferret is nocturnal and hunts at night.  When the prairie dogs are sleeping in their burrows, the black-footed ferret sneaks in to kill and eat the prairie dogs.
