FAMILY LIFE

The black footed ferret usually raises three to four kits, but can raise up to ten kits.  The kits are born in May and June after the male and female mate in March and April.  The kits are helpless and blind.  The kits weigh about 5 to 9 grams and are covered in thin white hair. When they are three weeks old, they grow black markings.  Their eyes open when they are about 35 days old.  Their mother nurses them.  In July the kits come out of the burrows. The mother starts feeding the kits meat and puts them in separate burrows.  She gathers them at night and shows them how to hunt.  By September they leave their mother.  They live and hunt alone.  The kits are adults when they are 1 year old and have most of their babies when they are 3 to 4 years old.
