Problem & Purpose

Scientists predict that the Earth will warm up by 1.4 - 5.8C by the year 2100. This may not seem like a lot to us or even affect us because we won’t be around then but it will effect the future generations and the world in an extreme approach. It will cause many changes including the repeatedly mentioned melting of the polar ice caps. Global warming will also trigger more violent storms and hurricanes. If global warming is left ignored and we keep using our current sources of energy and continue to burn fossil fuels we will be increasing the affect of global warming.

This project suggests a way of obtaining methane which is a flammable gas that has many of the applications natural gas does. It can be used for cooking and heating. This project helps reduce two problems at the same time, the excessive waste in the world and the search for cleaner energy sources.

The foundation of this is based on the bacteria that live in the intestines of many animals. When this bacterium breaks down cellulose (the main ingredient in plant fibres) it produces bio-gas. The bio-digester works by utilizing the same process. For this reason methane is found in many other places as well, such as bogs, swamps and landfills.
