At the start of this project I knew very little about solar water heating.   I  therefore contacted Mr. David Kelly who is President of Sedmek Inc, a company that deals with designing, sourcing, installing and servicing wind and solar systems as well as offering consulting services.

 

 He informed me that a two solar collector system for a family of four is approximately $5800 if installed in Calgary.   The solar collectors would then heat 50-60% of your water supply.   The collector should be mounted on a roof facing south, at 30-60 degrees from horizontal for our latitude. 

Because of our weather, solar collectors are not 100% efficient.  On very cloudy days the sun’s rays are blocked, therefore the collectors would not produce any energy.  Cold weather however, doesn’t effect the collectors significantly because the sun’s rays can still reach the collectors.
