The experiment was quite successful. We started out and by day 1 we
already had a few results. We put mild steel nails into plastic
cups with different substances in them. We then took them out and
put them into pieces of paper towel. We did this at the same time
every day for a week and had our results. Over the week some of the
metals kept rusting. By the end of the week, the ammonia did nothing
to the nail. The ammonia and vinegar discoloured the nail. It also
created chemical reaction. The ammonia and water rusted quite a bit.
The water just rusted the nail. The vinegar and the vinegar/water
made a chemical reaction with the nails. We don’t know what it was.
The nails changed color to a brownish-red. And there were clumps of
a black substance smeared onto the nail. The ammonia and vinegar did
the same thing but it took almost six days longer. Our conclusion?
We found that water, and water/ammonia, out of all the substances,
did the most. The only reason the other substances did anything was
because we combined them with other substances. It was surprising
because water is the neutral between acids and bases.
