Experiment 1. Blind Taste Test
I first tested to see if a person could tell the four gums apart
with a blind chewing test. I gave each person a sample of gum
(assigned at random using the dice, Table 2) and let them chew
it for 20 seconds. Then I asked them if the gum tasted hot,
cold, sweet or sour. I gave each person a piece of bread and a
drink of water between each gum sample.

Experiment 2. Mouth Temperature after Chewing Gum Types
In my main experiment I measured the temperature of a person’s
mouth after chewing each of four types of gum. Each person was
given a gum type and then chewed it for 60 seconds. I then
measured their mouth temperature between their gums and cheek on
the bottom of their mouth. The thermometer waited 20 seconds to
get the temperature and then beeped. I then wrote down the
temperature in my log book.
I would give them a drink of water and a piece of bread to clear
their mouth out between gum types. I did the experiment two
times.
I also measured their mouth temperature after chewing nothing
for 60 seconds. The results of the temperature measurements are
presented in Table 4 in the observations.
