Background
Information
The average kid chews about 200 pieces of gum every year. People
chew that much gum without knowing the effects it can have on
their mouth. The type of gum you chew does have an affect on
your mouth, cinnamon gums can kill the bacteria living in the
human mouth and reduces bad breath. Sweet gums can increase the
cavity causing bacteria in your mouth. Therefore gum can change
the environment of the human mouth and may also change the
temperature.
I am interested in seeing if four types of gum flavours will
change the temperature of a person’s mouth. The types I will
experiment with are;
Ice Gum Flavour: Most ice gums are flavoured with mint flavours.
The most common are peppermint, spearmint and wintergreen, but
there are more than 20 types of mint growing around the world.
Dentyne has created many intense mint flavours such as,
"Peppermint", "Arctic Chill", "Spearmint", "Shiver Mint",
"Vanilla Chill", "Cool Frost" and "Wild Winter".
Fire Gum Flavours: Most “hot” or fire gum flavours are created
with the spice of cinnamon.
Sweet Gum Flavours: Dentyne Tango “Mixed Berry” is flavoured
with berry fruit flavours and Sucralose (sugarless sweetener)
Sour Gum Flavours: Sour gum flavours are created by mixing
either acetic acid (vinegar) or citric acid with various other
flavours such as apple or cherry to create sour flavours.
FACT FLASH!!!!
The world’s oldest piece of chewing gum is 9000 years old!
