Oil Extraction

Experiment with electrodes

Problem- How to separate oil from oil sands using a cheap, and a less time consuming way?

Material-
· Graphite Rods
· Crocodile Clips
· Spare Wires (15amps)
· Spare Plug
· A bowl that can withstand high temperatures
· Salt
· Thermometer
· A piece of ceramic material or cardboard
· Oil sands

Procedure-
1. Two solid graphite rods are extracted from non- alkaline batteries.
2. Drill two holes with a diameter of roughly .5 cm wide, 2 cm away from each other in ceramic material- which should have a diameter of about 7 cm.
3. The graphite rods are then pushed in the holes so they can be dipped in water.
4. Take some spare wires and smooth them out so they can be inserted in a spare plug to transfer electricity. Smooth the other end so that it can fit into a crocodile clip.
5. Clip the graphite rods with the crocodile clips, for transfer of electricity.
6. Take a beaker of water about ¾ of the way full and put some salt into it.
7. Plug the experiment into the electric outlet.
8. Then after a minute, unplug it.
9. Add some oil sands into the water and plug it in again.
