If spectinomycin at concentration of one deviation below its MIC is applied to E.
coli with an application of ultrasound, then ultrasound will enhance the
inhibition of E. coli to produce a synergistic effect. Drawing on
previous research, ultrasound is known to enhance the transport of small
molecules across polymer membranes and gels. If similar transporting enhancement
occurs in this case, then increased transport of spectinomycin into the cell may
be responsible for the increasedinhibition/killing of bacteria.
