The antibiotic chosen in this experiment is spectinomycin, a member of the aminocyclitols. It inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit and, in doing so, inhibiting protein synthesis. This particular antibiotic was chosen for the experiment because its inhibitory effects pale in comparison to more powerful antibiotics, such as penicillin, and its mechanism of action requires the antibiotic to first be permeated into the bacteria, where ultrasound may help in its transport across the cell membrane.
