Ethanol

How It Is Made

Ethanol is made from a variety of carbon based feedstocks, like sugar cane, potatoes, sunflower, fruit, corn, grain, wheat etc. There are three steps in the production of ethanol. First, the plants are fermented using yeast. Water is then removed by distillation. Lastly, the solution is purified using molecular sieves.

The process of fermentation can be written as a chemical equation:

C6H12O6 (aq) → 2 C2H6O(aq) + 2 CO2 (g)
