M 'n' M’s

Time left in the water – 10:57

The water slowly spread up the filter paper. It took 1:40 for the water to reach the color. It took a while before the colors started to spread. Then, finally, you could see some yellow forming underneath the green line and blue on the top. The lines were thin and blended together. In the middle of the filter paper, the colors looked faded, but near the edges of the filter paper, the colors still looked bright. The blue line thickened and it looked very watery. As the water kept working its way up the filter paper, the lines started fuzzing, looking very watery and dull. When the color stopped, and the water kept going, I took the filter paper out. I learned that green M and M’s are mixtures of greens, blues, and yellow’s, and at the end, the colors were faded and dull.

Wet Erase Marker

Time left in the water – 12:25

It took a while for the water to reach the line made by the wet erase marker. The water reached the middle of the line first. The line started fuzzing. A light, green color appeared at the bottom of the line, which soon turned to a yellow. The line started getting thicker. At 5 minutes, I could see yellow, two shades of greens, blues, and I also saw some black. The blue became more and more vivid as the water made its way up the paper, as did the yellow. Between the yellow and the blue, you could see a strip of the white filter paper. The colors were separating themselves. At 10 minutes, there was a thick line of yellow at the bottom, a thick space with green at the sides, and a thick line of blues at the top. When no more color was spreading, I took the filter paper out. The green wet erase marker was made up of mixtures of blues, yellows, and greens. At the end, the colors were still bright and vibrant.

Sharpie

Time left in the water – 11:22

The colors started moving after 5:58. The line fuzzed slightly, but that was all. The line got lighter by a shade, but the colors never spread. I was hoping that the Sharpie marker would work even though it is a permanent marker, but it never did. At 11:22, I finally gave up and took the filter paper out of the water. I repeated the process, hoping that it might work for me a second time, but I got the same results.

Crayola Marker

Time left in the water – 11:56

When the water reached the line, you could see different shades of green – both light and dark. As the water progressed its way up the filter paper, the light green at the bottom turned to a faded yellow. At 7:30, you could notice some blue at the top. Like the m and m’s, the color didn’t stay on the line, it floated above it. The colors were formed in shaped that looked like flames. Although you couldn’t tell very well, there were blues, greens, and yellows in the green Crayola Sketching Marker. When the colors stopped spreading, I took the filter paper out. At the end, the colors were still bright.

Highlighter

Time left in the water – 8:57

When the water got to the line, you could immediately see neon yellow. This yellow quickly moved upwards, leaving the original line behind. There is no evidence of blue or green at five minutes. The line got thicker, and started to fade near the bottom, but the top is still as bright as it was to begin with. There is a slight color of green at one side of the filter paper, but nothing very noticeable. When I noticed that the water was passing the thick line and no color was going with it, I took the filter paper out. There was no blue, and barely and green in the highlighter. In the end, the color was still bright, except towards the bottom.

Excel Gum

Time left in the water – 5:36

When the water reached the line where the gum was, it changed the color to a lighter green. You could also see blues and there were faint yellows. It wasn’t long before the water passed the line, and went on its own. I found out that the Excel gum is mixtures of greens, and a little bit of blues and yellows. After I took the filter paper out of the water, the colors were faint and faded.
