Experiment > Procedure

  1. Wear goggles, mask, rubber gloves and Lab coat

  2. Label the glass containers from l to 3

  3. Dilute 45 ml of Muratic Acid with 90 ml of water

  4. Pour orange peels, saw dust and newspapers into Container No. l, 2 and 3 respectively

  5. Pour 45 ml of dilute Muratic Acid into each container

  6. Prepare water bath for 40ºC approximately and insert a thermometer to ensure that the temperature is constant. Refer to Figure 1.2.

  7. Check the glucose content every l5 minutes and record the glucose level by comparing the colour change with the table provided

  8. After one hour, add a package of yeast into 10 ml of warm water and pour the yeast solution into each jar and seal each container with a double layered plastic bag. Let the containers stand in the warm water bath at about 30°C for 36 hours. After that, use coolant testing strips to determine amount of ethanol produced.
