The Canadarm was first flown In November of 1981. The Canadarm is considered one of the greatest inventions developed for space made by Canada. It was developed mainly by Spar Aerospace Limited in Ontario. The full name of the Canadarm is Shuttle Remote Manipulator System or SRMS for short. The arm is 50 feet long and it functions like a human arm. It has six joints, two at its shoulders, one at its elbow and three at its wrists. It weighs less than 450 kilograms and it cannot even support itself under normal gravity on earth. It was first flown In November 1981 on the space shuttle STS-2. The Canadarm is used to lift and manipulate large pieces of equipment and payloads. It has also been used to capture and repair satellites. In space it can manipulate loads of around thirty thousand kilograms in space at speeds of up to sixty centimeters a second. The Canadarm has never malfunctioned in 50 missions and 7,000 rotations around the earth.
