
Neil Alden Armstrong was born on August 5th, 1930 in Wapakoneta, Ohio (Wikipedia, 2007). In 1947 Neil started studying at Purdue University and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1955 (Wikipedia, 2007). Then he went to different universities such as USC and MIT (Wikipedia, 2007). There he met Janet Elizabeth Shearon and they married on January 28, 1956 (Wikipedia, 2007). In September 13, 1962 Armstrong was chosen at one of the astronauts in the “New Nine” (Wikipedia, 2007). The first mission he was part of was the Gemini 5. On that he served as the back-up pilot (Wikipedia, 2007). They launched on August 21, 1965 and they did a whole orbit around the world (Wikipedia, 2007). He would then do two more space launches Gemini 8 & 11 (Wikipedia, 2007). These weren’t major space flights. His next space flight would be the Apollo 11(Wikipedia, 2007). Armstrong was offered this job on December 23, 1968 by Deke Slayton (Wikipedia, 2007). He would be accompanied by Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins (Wikipedia, 2007). On July 20th, 1969 Apollo 11 landed on the moon (Wikipedia, 2007). Upon landing Armstrong said one of the most famous sayings “This is one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” (Wikipedia, 2007). Also after arrival they walked on the moon to examine its substance (Wikipedia, 2007). He also drove a car on the moon (Wikipedia, 2007). Armstrong was the first person to land on the moon and he is praised around the world.
