The BIG Question:

Can ethanol be produced as a low-cost, environmentally friendly alternative to petroleum-based fuels?

Purpose:

To demonstrate ethanol can be produced as a low-cost, environmentally friendly alternative to petroleum-based fuels.

Hypothesis:

Ethanol is a low-cost environmentally friendly alternative to petroleum-based fuels.

Variables:

For purposes of this experiment following variables were identified and studied:

  • Independent Variables
    • Different materials used for fermentation
    • Different temperatures used for fermentation

  • Dependent Variable
    • Ethanol produced by different materials at different temperatures

  • Control Variables
    • Specific gravity of ethanol produced by different materials
    • Static friction on the car for each surface
    • Specific gravity of ethanol produced at different temperatures
