> Project Information - Grade Category: Gr. 4-6 - Team Size: 1 - Team Captain First Name: Ayoub - Team Captain Last Name: Zubairi - Subject Area: Earth/ Environmental - Project type: Experimental - Language: English (Canada) - Project Title: 'Hurricane Madness!' - Project Abstract: My experiment was testing what the strongest (meaning the most rapid spinning) and weakest (slowest spinning) points of a hurricane are. I used a 3/4 liter bowl of water as a hurricane. I attached a paper clip to a string, and the string to a ruler. Using a large wooden spoon, I began stirring the water in a clockwise motion, dipping the paper clip in various places. I observed that the center was the weakest, and the farther you went from the center, the stronger it was. First I began stirring the water with the wooden spoon, then I dipped the paperclip, holding the ruler, in the center, and observed that the paperclip was barely moving. This proved that my hypothesis was correct. This is because the winds of a hurricane spin around the center, or the 'core', meaning that they don't actually circulate in the center. The second part of my hypothesis guessed that the farther you went from the center, the stronger the wind, or in this case, the current! (And it was correct) Of course, with a real hurricane, if you went too far, the winds would obviously get weaker and you would exit danger zone.
