Conclusions

Grebot et al. (03) found that a biathlon decreases memory. The results in this experiment support this fact that exercise decreases short-term memory, but they oppose Gutfeld's research. Gutfeld (92) found that exercise improves memory. Different types of exercise might have a different effects on memory.

Subjects

  • 2 x 8-year olds
  • 1 x Adult
  • Active

Procedure

  1. Showed the subjects the numbers for the test for 30 seconds.
  2. Subjects turned over number page and wrote down the numbers in the correct order.
  3. Subjects vigorously swam for 45 minutes.
  4. Subjects repeated steps 1 and 2.

My results for exercise show that the scores decrease. The before score is larger than the after score for all subjects. The accuracy decreased by 10 percent for Subject 1, by 20 percent for Subject 2, and by 30 percent for Subject 3. Subject 3's score decreased the most with 30 percent between the before and after scores. Subject 1 had the largest score with 100 percent for the before score and 90 percent for the after score. All of the scores decreased in percentage of accuracy (Click chart to enlarge).
