What is a Gear?

A gear is a toothed wheel with notches (cogs). Their in tons of devices! They transfer motion from one of them to another. They use axles, chains and ropes.

IMPORTANT   WORDS

• (cogs) another meaning of notches.

• (gear ratio) 40 teeth one gear and 10 teeth on another = a 40/10 gear ratio or a 4/1 gear ratio.

• (turn ratio) on a 4/1 gear ratio = 4.(ie.one rotation large gear outputs 4 turns on smaller.

•   mechanical advantage - ratio of output and input.
