Other Uses of Alum

Alum is a natural mineral that is found in both ground and surface water, and in the food we eat. Potassium alum is the common form of alum available commercially, although both soda alum and ammonium alum are manufactured.  Alum is added to our drinking water to purify or reduce turbidity; as food additives in baking soda, pickles; used to treat certain medical conditions like gun shot wounds, or as an astringent or styptic; a home remedy for canker sores. There was even a study done on 48 sixth-graders using a mouthrinse containing Alum which have demonstrated activity against oral bacteria and have shown indications of inhibiting plaque and gingivitis.  The study found that it significantly reduced the amount of plaque and gingivitis among young children and that it was safe and no evidence of harmful effects on the oral tissue.  (Ref.1)
