Part 2: Assembly of the Testing Apparatus
-
Assemble the frame, as shown below, using pipe glue.
-
Drill a small hole, just big enough to fit the head of the screw, about 2 cm from the top of the apparatus on each side. Each hole should be facing directly towards the opposite pipe.
-
Insert a screw into the centre of each end of the wooden dowel.
-
Insert each screw into the holes on the testing apparatus. The dowel should lie straight across between the two vertical pipes.
-
Tie the two pieces of monofilament to the wooden dowel. They should hang 1/3 and 2/3 along it.
-
Tie the lifter to the monofilament, and let it hang, as shown below.
-
Make sure that the apparatus is at eye level. Carefully tape the cardboard protractor to the farthest vertical pipe so that the bottom edge of the lifter lines up with the 0 mark. The testing apparatus is now complete. (You will need to cut the monofilament and reattach the second lifter using new monofilament. The protractor may also have to be adjusted.)
