Part 1: Assembly of the Lifters
For the Small Lifter:
-
Glue the basic balsa wood lifter frame together using cyanoacrylate glue, as shown, for each of the three sides of the lifter.
-
Glue a strip of foil to each lifter frame so that it is centred, with at least 10mm excess on the top and either side. When dry, fold excess foil over the top and sides, to insure a good electrical connection.

|
Step 1 - Assembling the frame |
Step 2 - Adding the foil |
|
-
Cut the large drinking straw into 6 pieces, about 3cm each (Size of these components is not critical). Place three over top of the wire supports, joining the frame together, and place the other 3 inside the frames, between the two horizontal pieces.
-
Add wire to the frame. Twist the wire three times around the straw on each wire support, and finally, twist the ends together and trim them. The wire should form a continuous triangle, parallel to the higher horizontal balsa wood support.

|
Step 3 - Connecting the 3 sides of the frame |
Step 4 - Adding the wire |
For the Large Lifter:
Follow the same steps for construction, substituting:
- 3 pieces of balsa wood 300mm long for 3 pieces 200 mm long
- 3 pieces of aluminum foil 320mm x 90mm for 3 pieces 220mm x 90mm
- 920mm of copper wire for 620mm
