Materials

For the Small Lifter:

  • balsa wood
    • 8 pieces: 3mm x 2mm x 75mm
    • 6 pieces: 6mm x 2mm x 200mm
  • thin aluminum foil - 3 pieces: 220mm x 90mm
  • 620mm of thin copper wire (stripped of any insulation)
  • large plastic drinking straw
  • cyanoacrylate glue (also called "Crazy Glue")
  • scissors, exacto knife (for cutting pieces)

For the Large Lifter:

  • balsa wood
    • 8 pieces: 3mm x 2mm x 75mm
    • 6 pieces: 6mm x 2mm x 300mm
  • thin aluminum foil - 3 pieces: 320mm x 90mm
  • large plastic drinking straw
  • 920mm of thin copper wire (stripped of any insulation.)
  • cyanoacrylate glue (also called "Crazy Glue")
  • scissors, exacto knife (for cutting pieces)

For Testing Apparatus:

  • ½” PVC piping
    • 2 pieces: 3 ft long
    • 2 pieces: 1.5 ft long
    • two ½” PVC pipe caps
    • two ½” PVC “T” ’s
    • four ½” PVC pipe elbows
  • wooden dowel: 2cm in diameter, 3 feet long
  • monofiliment: 2 pieces, 2 feet long each
  • pipe glue
  • two screws and screwdriver
  • large cardboard protractor (quarter-circular, with marks every 10 degrees)

For Testing Purposes:

  • high voltage power supply capable of supplying about 30kV
  • alligator clips
  • 2 pieces of wire, approx. 50cm each, per lifter
  • tripod
  • small piece of doughnut-shaped cardboard
  • tape
