Materials and Procedure
Materials
• 4 brief math tests (see appendix 2)
• 1 grade 6 level math textbook
• an answer key for marking each test (see appendix 2)
• 1 leisure activities survey (see appendix 2)
• 23 grade 6 students from whom informed consent was obtained
Procedure
1. Distribute permission letters and informed consent forms to all students, and wait for return of letters, signed by parents.
2. Ask grade six teacher to assign each student who returned a permission form an identification number to preserve anonymity.
3. Administer test 1 for the after the first class in the gym unit, allow 15 minutes for each test. Test students who were absent the following day.
4. Wait until after the last class in that gym unit before administering the second test.
5. Compare the scores of both tests and find the difference in scores for each student, and then find the average difference in scores. Check if there is an overall better performance on one test and determine if there is a relationship between gender and average difference in test scores.
6. Repeat steps 1 - 5 with two to three other gym units and compare all results.
7. Administer leisure activities survey at some point during testing.
