Mathematical Inclination and Recreation:
Part 2
Background
Last year, I looked for a relationship between the
math skills and favourite leisure activities (see appendix 2) of 10
grade 6 students. I found a relationship between Data Management and
Probability skills and sports or dance as a favourite activity. This
year I am looking for a relationship between a particular form of
physical activity and Data Management and Probability test scores.
A study performed by the California Department of Education
(http://www.cde.ca.gov/cyfsbranch/lsp/health/pecommunications.htm)
found that there was a relationship between academic achievement and
physical fitness. The study also said that the relationship between
physical fitness and mathematics was greatest. Specifically, the most
physically fit students had higher mathematics scores.
In 1983 the theory of multiple intelligences was developed by Professor
Howard Gardiner at Harvard University. There are eight different
multiple intelligence categories, which are; linguistic intelligence,
logical/mathematical intelligence, bodily/kinesthetic intelligence,
musical intelligence, interpersonal intelligence, intrapersonal
intelligence and naturalist intelligence. He found that school focused
too much on the linguistic and logical/mathematical intelligences.
Is it possible that some intelligences are superior to others on some
areas, like mathematics? Mathematics may be related to
bodily/kinesthetic intelligence.
