Project Information
  • Subject Area: Chemistry
  • Project Type: Experiment
  • Language: English
  • Summary: Discovering Photosynthesis and which colour of light is best. Green, Red or White
  • Tools: Digital Camera, Powerpoint
  • Idea: A book that I read.
  • Special Skills: Convincing Dad to build the box.

3
Background
  • Photosynthesis is a process of sunlight, carbon dioxide  and water which is mixed with chlorophyll to make sugar. The process also releases oxygen so we can breath.  The plants use the sugar as food to grow.

4
Hypothesis
  • I think the white light will win, because it is most like the sun.
5
Procedure
  • First I had to get Dad to build the box.
  • The box has three compartments with different colour lights.  Red, White, and Green.
6
Procedure
  • On March 22nd I planted the beans in three different containers.
  • Each container had Peat pellets and no light.
  • The plants started to come up on  March 24th.
  • On the 26th I put them under the lights.
7
Observations April 6th
  • Red Light - Falling behind Fast.
  • White light - Plants are almost the same height as green and have bigger leaves.
  • Green light - Tallest plants but 3 have grown leaning toward the white light.
8
Observations April 12th
  • All three watered 2/3 cup.

9
Observations April 17th
  • All three watered 1 cup.

10
Observations April 30th
  • All three watered 1 cup.

11
Results
  • Photosynthesis works the best with the white light.
  • Red light kills plants
  • Green light doesn’t do so well.
12
Conclusions
  • Photosynthesis is affected by light colour.
  • My Dad and I went on Google and found a website that explained it all.
  • Plants actually like blue light the best, sort of like green and don’t like red at all.
  • My Dad says white light contains all the colours of the spectrum (including blue) and that is why the white light did the best. I think he is right this time.
