Bamboo 8 Tray
Mason Jars 3 Ruler
Water 125 ml Camera
Unsweetened Apple Juice 125 ml Liquid measuring cup 125 ml
7-Up   Dry measuring cups (125 ml & 250 ml)
Stove   Dinner Knife
Pot   Sharp Knife
Spoon to stir   Electronic Balance

METHOD:

A. Water

1. Boil water for 3 minutes.

2. Remove from stove using a pot holder.

3. Measure 125 ml of water using a liquid measuring cup. Check at eye level for an accurate measurement.

4. Measure sugar using a 125 ml and 250 ml dry measuring cup. Measure accurately by using the flat edge of the knife to ensure it is level.

5. Pour the 125 ml of water into the Mason. Pour 375 ml of sugar into the Mason jar.

6. Stir for 1 minute with a spoon.

7. Remove the sharp end of the bamboo skewer with a sharp knife. Place a Bamboo Skewer in the jar. Leave the jar open to the air.

8. Place the jar on the tray.

B. 7 -Up

1. Boil 7 -Up for 3 minutes.

2. Remove from stove using a pot holder.

3. Measure 125 ml of 7 -Up using a liquid measuring cup. Check at eye level for an accurate measurement.

4. Measure sugar using a 125 ml and 250 ml dry measuring cup. Measure accurately by using the flat edge of the knife to ensure it is level.

5. Pour the 125 ml of 7 -Up into the Mason. Pour 375 ml of sugar into the Mason jar.

6. Stir for 1 minute with a spoon.

7. Remove the sharp end of the bamboo skewer with a sharp knife. Place a Bamboo Skewer in the jar. Leave the jar open to the air.

C. Unsweetened Apple Juice

1. Boil unsweetened apple juice for 3 minutes.

2. Remove from stove using a pot holder.

3. Measure 125 ml of unsweetened apple juice using a liquid measuring cup. Check at eye level for an accurate measurement.

4. Measure sugar using a 125 ml and 250 ml dry measuring cup. Measure accurately by using the flat edge of the knife to ensure it is level.

5. Pour the 125 ml of unsweetened apple juice into the Mason.

D. After two weeks:

1. Removed the bamboo skewer from liquid.

2. Placed it on cling wrap, to dry.

3. Tar the electronic balance (tarring is making the balance scale read 0).

4. Mass the 5 bamboo skewers. Divide the total mass by 5, to get the average mass of one bamboo skewer. Record.

5. Mass each stick with crystals on them. Record.

  • Calculate the mass of the crystal. (Mass of bamboo skewer and sugar crystals minus the mass of bamboo skewer ).
