ANALYSING THE RESULTS:

What do the results mean? Unsweetened apple juice is the best liquid solution to grow sugar crystals in a two week time period.

Do they really show that? Yes, because when I put them on the balance scale, the unsweetened apple juice sugar crystal was the largest (mass 3.636 g). If, I had time, I would have repeated the experiment to see if the results were the same.

Did they support my hypothesis, or is further work needed? My hypothesis was rejected. The unsweetened apple juice liquid grew the biggest sugar crystals and not the 7 Up (mass 3.321 g) and the water was the smallest mass at 3.091g. To make sure this was correct, I would have repeated the experiment again to ensure accuracy.

Are there other explanations for what happened? There are 27 grams of sugar in unsweetened apple juice, this could have an effect on the results. However, there is more sugar in 7 Up (42 g), so it would be expected that the 7 Up would grow the largest sugar crystals.

How do my results compare to what I’ve read about this topic? 7 Up has the highest sugar content compared to unsweetened apple juice and water, which has no sugar content.

What could have been better about my method? The jars were facing in a north south direction on the dinning room table, the window was facing east west. The furthest south jar was the apple juice and it was closest to the window. This jar might have received a bit more sunlight than the others. More sun light might have caused the unsweetened apple juice liquid to evaporate more than the others. This might have been the cause for the larger sugar crystals forming on the unsweetened apple juice bamboo skewer.

Next time, I would mass the bamboo skewer individually to use in the experiment. I did not do this ahead of time, so I had to take an average mass of the bamboo skewers.
