Materials for System Testing

  • Constructed Model System
  • 13 Range Analog Multimeter
  • Separate Single Solar Panel System
Procedure
      1. Set the system in an area where direct sunlight reaches all eight panels, facing the south.
      2. Connect the open ends of the model system to the positive and negative ends of the multimeter. Ensure that there is good exposure to solar energy.
      3. Set the multimeter to the correct range for an exact value.
      4. Read the value provided for the total power output of the system.
      5. Rewire the solar panels of the solar tree model to be in a series circuit.
      6. Using the same method of measurement, use the analog multimeter to measure the voltage and amperage of the system.
      7. Remove the solar panels from the solar tree model, and place them flat on the ground, similar to the single-panel system.
      8. Measure the voltage and amperage of this new arrangement.
      9. Rewire the solar panels, while keeping the perpendicular arrangement, into the original parallel-series circuit.
      10. Measure the voltage and amperage of this arrangement once again.
Variables for System Testing
    • Manipulated Variable: System Tested (Solar Tree, Single Panel) and its Form of Circuitry
    • Responding Variables: Voltage, Amperage
    • Controlled Variables: Time of Day, Multimeter Used, Test Area Facing the Southern Direction, Canadian Standards Association Quality Approval of Panels
