To study the coniferous spruce tree (Picea glauca as the species of choice) by measuring its lateral and sub-lateral branch angles in order to see how it collects sunlight from various angles on its south-facing side. Five trees will be selected from each quadrant in Calgary: northwest, northeast, southwest and southeast. There will be equal distribution of tree locations.
-
To combine the collected information on branch angles, environmental and other phenotype data to generate a pictorial model of how the solar collecting system might look.
-
To determine any applicable mathematical formulas specifically for this species of tree.
-
To construct a miniature working model with photovoltaic panels to test for successful operation, comparing it to a system consisting of only one panel and various other methods of circuit wiring (parallel-series and series). The best system out of the two will be determined based on their overall power output.
