alien species

    a species that did not originally occur in the areas in which it is now found, but that arrived as a direct or indirect result of human activity

allelopathy

    the suppression of growth of one plant species by another due to the release of toxic substances

biodiversity

    the diversity of life in all its forms and all levels of organization; includes the genetic diversity within a species, the diversity of species within an ecosystem and the diversity of ecosystems within landscapes

ecocentric

    ecological view that everything on Earth has intrinsic value and that humans are a part of the interdependent web of existence

ecosystem

    a system of living organisms interacting with each other and their environment, linked together by energy flows and material cycling

    everything that surrounds an organism or organisms, including both natural and human-built elements

invasive species

    a species that has moved into an area and reproduced so aggressively that it has replaced some of the original species

monoculture

    the growth of a single kind of organism especially on agricultural or forest land

native species

    plant species that are indigenous to a particular natural region; they were in that region prior to the time of Euro-American settlement

natural area

    an area that is in a largely undisturbed condition and supports primarily species that are native to the area

noxious weed

    a plant designated as requiring control of its spread, growth, ripening or scattering of seed

weed

    native or non native plants that are unwanted in a particular area at a particular time
