The addition of detergent is an important part of the DNA extraction process; it is responsible for the breakdown of lipids and proteins found in the cell membrane. Some household products, such laundry detergents, will be much more efficient in dissolving lipid and protein molecules than others; therefore, they will enable us to obtain a larger quantity of DNA strands.
