Goal:
The goal of our experiment was to extract fats from various different foods. We concentrated mainly on junk food because it is known to be more unhealthy and contain more fat than most foods. Our three foods were chocolate chips, potato chips and sunflower seeds.
Materials:
Method:
- First
we measured out 5 grams of chocolate chips (approx. 10 chipits).
We crushed them with the hammer between two pieces of tin foil.
- We
labeled a test tube. (to put the type of food in)
- We put the crushed chocolate chips in the test tube labeled "chocolate
chips".
- Then we poured acetone in the test tube and vigorously mixed it so that the acetone could absorbed the fat from the chocolate chips.
- After that, we carefully decanted the acetone into a Petri dish labeled "fat from chocolate chips" being sure to leave only the chocolate behind.
- Then we repeated these steps with the potato chips and with the sunflower seeds.
- We let the Petri dishes sit open overnight so that the acetone could evaporate and leave the fat behind.
