Hypothesis:

If the temperature of the acid bath is increased then the corrosion rate of aluminium will increase. If the temperature of the acid bath is decreased then the corrosion rate of aluminium will decrease.

Variables:

Independent Variable: Temperature, Acid Solution.

Dependant Variable: The Amount of Corrosion

Historical Development of the Field:

The study of metals is one of the oldest sciences. Its origins date back to 6,000 B.C. There are 86 known metals, each with their particular characteristics. Humans have been trying to understand and control corrosion of metals since they were first discovered. Certain periods in history were named after the particular metal that had been discovered during that time. The Iron and the Bronze Age were two important periods of experimentation around metals and corrosion. The early experimenters were called alchemists and spent considerable time trying to understand how different metals could be combined and their reactions. Through some of these experiments, these early scientists discovered that some metals deteriorated when combined with other substances. This was the first discovery of corrosion.
