Are Detergents really Bad ?
Detergents themselves are actually good. We use them for cleaning floors, clothes, dishes, windows and many more. A detergent is a synthetic cleaning substance used with hard water to get the dirt particles off material or appliances.
"You think detergents rock, but what is in them doesn’t rock."
In the 1960’s, scientists found out that one of the key ingredient Phosphate in detergents was causing pollution in the oceans, lakes, rivers and seas. This was the culprit of causing pollution. Although phosphates make the detergent work better they cause too much algae to grow and the depletes the oxygen supply in the water. Many animals and plants die from this as oxygen is vital to their survival.
A process is called eutrophication in which humans pollute the water with untreated sewage or allow chemicals to run right in to the water is another danger to our environment.. This untreated water has too many nutrients in it and this upsets the natural balance in the water and causes algae growth. Fish can’t eat all the algae, so some of the algae die. Too much oxygen is used by the bacteria trying to decompose the dead algae. Now there is not enough oxygen for the fish, plants and animals to live. As these more living things die the bacteria uses more oxygen to decompose their bodies. Eventually, their is no oxygen and a river or a lake are dead.
We can
eliminate and reduce the problem.
