Biography
Born to John and Virginia Hubble, Edwin Powell Hubble was received
into their loving arms on the twentieth of November 1889, in beautiful
Marshfield Missouri. The Hubble family moved to Chicago Illinois, when
Edwin was four years old, where he developed as an above average academic
student, but excelled athletically. Hubble broke the Illinois State
High School jump record, and while attending the University of Chicago,
he grew into an excellent basketball player. After receiving a scholarship
to attend the university, Hubble received his B.S. To pursue a career
in law, Hubble received the Rhodes Scholarship to attend Oxford University
law school. After receiving his degree, the new lawyer moved back to
America, where he opened a practice in Louisville, Kentucky. The practice
was opened in 1912, and Hubble left it in 1913 to pursue a new career
in the exploration of space. A doctorate in astronomy was received
from the University of Chicago, thus starting Hubble’s Career
in science.
In 1917, Hubble was offered a position at the Mount Wilson observatory
located in Pasadena, California, where he worked with a meager 100
inch telescope. Hubble let it be known that to further advance his
studies a higher magnification telescope was needed. His desire was
granted when he was offered a position at Mount Palmer Observatory,
where he was able to work with a 200 inch telescope.
After establishing revolutionary theories which propelled the astronomical
world forward, Hubble died on September 28, 1953, at the age of 63,
in San Marino California.
