Summary

The purpose of this project was to determine the effect of weight training on the accuracy of throwing a football. My hypothesis is that weight training with regular throwing practice will improve throwing accuracy over the training period. Six male high school students were selected to participate in the study and were categorized as weight lifters that will practice throwing (Subject A), weight lifters that will not practice throwing (Subjects C and D), non-weight lifters that will practice throwing (Subjects B and E), and non-weight lifters that will not practice throwing (Subject F). Each trained for 6 weeks. Each subject threw 5 times from 5, 10 and 15 yards in a random order at a target of concentric red and white circles. Horizontal and vertical measurements were taken. The distance from the centre was calculated. Subjects were retested after 3 weeks and after 6 weeks. A Two-Way ANOVA test was applied comparing Start and 3 weeks and comparing Start and 6 weeks (distance from the centre). Graphical trends were seen but only one significant difference was found after the 3 week training period, at 5 yards where the only source of variance that was significant (C.I. of 99%) was the training period.

Source of Idea

The past season I was going to play quarterback but unfortunately had to spend my time as team manager because I broke my collarbone just before the first game. At the end of the football season my coach came up to me and said, “And don’t forget to lift some weights and keep practicing throwing so your throwing mechanics don’t disappear.” By doing this I would strengthen my shoulder so I’d be ready for the next season. I wondered if this program would make me more accurate. I wanted to find out what was the best way of training in the off-season to become a more accurate quarterback
