Time travel--is it possible? That depends. To the future: yes. Time travel to the past is a different story.
The scientific study of time travel was only taken seriously recently. The first people to think about the science of time travel were science fiction writers. Major fictional influences and contributions to our exploration of time travel include: “The Time Machine” by H. G. Wells, “Contact” by Carl Sagan, and “Star Treck”.
Einstein’s theories of general and special relativity gave us the principles of physics that made it possible for scientists to think about time travel. Einstein told us that time is relative and that velocity and gravity slow down and speed time. These theories helped us to further understand how the universe works and that one object can travel in time relative to other objects in space time. As we learn more about the universe, more concepts that we previously thought of as purely fiction begin to be thought of as more and more possible.
We have actually sent particles to the future in special relativity experiments, but we are still working on time travel to the past and so far only have theories like worm holes and quantum multiverses.
s we understand more about physics and the universe we may find new ways to travel to the past. The question I had coming into this project is whether the new discoveries in physics like quantum teleportation, will allow us to come up with new and more practical theories of time travel. I am especially interested in the possiblity of sending information through time because it is likely that the teleportation experiments will allow us to use photons to transmit information.
