Potash

Potash is another one of Saskatchewan’s exports

~Potash was formed when ancient seas evaporated

~ Currently, we have seven operating potash mines in Saskatchewan; one of them is the largest potash mine in the world

~ Potassium, the chemical found in potash, is the 8th most abundant element in the earth’s crust and in sea water

~95% of potash is used as crop fertilizer; the rest is used to make products like soap, glass, chemicals and road salts

~The by-product which comes from making potash is called potash tailings

~These tailings consist of clay, potassium, NACL (salt), and brine

~Approximately 2.7% of the raw product are tailings

~The tailings are left in large pies outside the mines
