Subject Area: Biology
Project Type: Descriptive Project Type I Scientific Research (A Study)
Project Level: Standard
Project Format: Traditional HTML
Abstract: This project focuses on the causes and effects of XYY Syndrome; describes methods for identifying chromosomal abnormalities and the functions of the genes on these chromosomes;
and contains an in-depth literature review outlining current understandings and misunderstandings of the XYY disorder.
Software Tools Used: Microsoft Power Point, Microsoft FrontPage, Adobe Photoshop
5.5, Corel WordPerfect 9, Internet Explorer 5.5
Hardware Tools: Computer, Scanner, Caffeine
Source of Idea of Project: There is a one page mention of XYY syndrome in the
Nelson Biology textbook used for Grade 12 Biology classes in Alberta. I thought this superficial treatment didn't do the XYY syndrome any real justice insofar as explaining the effects this disorder has on the individuals affected by it, or why it was the first real case of mass hysteria over "criminal genes."
Special Skills: Knowledge of HTML, relatively thorough understanding of human genomics and karyotyping.
Awards won so far: None
